Shake, Rattle and Roll

Have you ever experienced an earthquake? When the ground shakes and the buildings rattle, and the world suddenly feels like a small toy being shaken by a little toddler?

An earthquake struck just south of Portsmouth yesterday. Luckily it was small and the rescue services didn’t have to do anything, but it really makes you think about mortality and how the world can destroy our lives within seconds.

A friend of mine lives in Christchurch and we exchanged messages when the earthquake happened there earlier this year. He told me of the horror of people being pulled out of the rubble and families crying, bereft and wondering where their loved ones were. And then the tsunami struck Japan and we all watched in horror as the events unfolded, with quake after quake, not to mention the snow that fell.

But my experiences of earthquakes have been much more amusing and harm free. Both occurred when I was in California on 2010. The first was when we were all sitting on the sofa in the playroom watching TV, and the ground literally shook. It was quite exciting, and my cousins didn’t seem too worried, so we rang friends with a “guess what? There’s an earthquake!!!!” message. It passed through quickly and we carried on our evening. The second was far more amusing. My sister and I had taken the boys on a trip to Palm Springs, and I had turned in for the night. The four of us were sharing a room, as in America they seem to have two double beds in a room, so we all fit in quite nicely. I was sleeping and my sister and the boys were watching TV when the quake hit and the room began to shake. Being the oldest, they obviously sought comfort in my kind words, so my sister tried to wake me.

“Leave me ALONE!!!” I said, in my sleep “AND STOP SHAKING THE BED!!!”

The next morning the boys regaled me with the story of what a grumpy madam I was, But I’m glad that my quake stories only make me look a little grumpy, and aren’t tales of tragedy.

Have you ever been caught up in a quake?

LMAO! I have never been caught in a quake. Your story is the only humorous one i have heard concerning the disaster. I kinda feel bad for laughing but it is indeed very funny. Just read it out to my colleagues at work and everyone can’t stop giggling.

I was in a quake in New York that woke me up about 6:30 one morning. The cats knew about it about 5 minutes before because they starting screaming. It was small but enough to shake the bed (all the cats were on the bed). We had another one evening that knocked books off shelves. Here in Texas we have very small ones that no one even reports. I worry about my cousin in Los Angeles because they are on a serious fault line and it’s only a matter of time before it blows.

    Hi hun!

We had one a few years ago that shook the country, but all I had to do was hang onto the other computer’s monitor until the rumbling and shaking stopped.

No damage, but it scared the crap out of my neighbours – I just apologised and said I’d farted… 🙂

    Love and hugs!

I’m a Southern Californian, so I’ve had my share of earthquakes. Although none as bad as the recent ones in Japan and such. But still, it is scary and leaves you wondering what will happen next.

😆 I was born and raised on the South Island of New Zealand – New Zealand, you may recall is known as the “shaky Isles” for good reason. So yes, I’ve lived through many earthquakes, luckily none like the one that devastated Christchurch earlier this year. That was really sad. It was where I went to boarding school.

LOL! Being in California, earthquakes occur a few times a year. And although us Californians are completely aware that earthquakes can do massive damage, we are rarely scared when we feel the ground shake!

I’ve never been caught in an earthquake before, but it’s nice to hear that you’ve had some funny experiences with ’em! I’m deathly terrified of just the thought lol, but I suppose they’re not ALL that scary.

    Hi Honey,
I was in a Belgian bar on the island of Rhodes in an earthquake which damaged the minaret of the local mosque. Everyone ran out into the street. I followed at a walk and was amused to notice that I was the only one who had brought his beer with him. Keep up the good work! XXX
