New Years Resolution for January: Chris Ramsey’s Offermation

If you read on a regular basis you will remember my new years resolution this year. I decided to not proceed like previous years where I vowed to go to the gym / lose weight / take up a hobby, as I know I don’t stick to them. No, this year I decided that I would push my boundaries and do something different once a month with the intention of getting out of my comfort zone, but January, as it always does, whizzed past at record speed and I suddenly realised I had a week left and no resolution buster booked. Christ.

And then, when googling a Geordie comedian I had seen on Celebrity Juice in December, I found out that Chris Ramsey was on tour, and coming to London. Not just coming to London, but performing at the Soho theatre which is just round the corner from my office. At £12.50 a ticket it would have been rude not to, and as I have only ever been to a comedy club once it totally fit into my unusual things bid.

I convinced the boy that he wanted to come with me (didn’t take much convincing to be honest) and booked the tickets. When Friday rolled round I was convinced we were going to miss it as text updates kept informing me that train cancellations and other problems were holding us up. No matter, work drinks were scheduled so I stayed in the office until he turned up. We rushed to the theatre, where there were plenty of seats remaining and the show hadn’t started (thank goodness, we escaped heckling!).

We grabbed some seats next to four super excited girls (“Have you seen him before? He is so hot! We love him!!!”) and waited for the show to begin.

It was hilarious.

He talked about how he used to claim he was from Newcastle when he is actually from South Shields, until the show Geordie Shore came out, had some banter with the Essex girls in the front of the crowd, and told us about a topic he had overheard; Offermation.

Offermation, he said, is a term when people share too much. Information that you don’t want to her. He explained about the nuances between Twitter and face to face contact, how you wouldn’t knock on someones door and tell them you had just eaten a sandwich.

It was brilliant! His main show was tailored around the round robin letter you get at Christmas, the letter updating you about the year that distant family members have had and how they have been getting on, detailing about people who you have never met,.

It made me think about blogging and how we really are the same; offering up information about ourselves to strangers that they really don’t want, or need to hear. but that’s human nature, isn’t it? if we didn’t tell people more than they needed to know, then none of us would have friendships or relationships that we have built up.

We had the most amazing time, stopping at a Thai restaurant in Covent Garden and having some Thai green curry. It was a brilliant night, and I’m now thinking a lot more around extra unusual things to fill my monthly quotas. If anyone has ny ideas then I would love to hear them.

My one recommendation; go and see him. For my January unusual trip it was fantastic, and I plan another unusual trip for February!
