Guest Post ~ Wedding Nightmares

10 Nov

Today’s post is from a dear blogging friend of mine and someone who has been commenting since I first started to write. She and I joke as there are quite a few days where we will post about the same subject, so we think we might be somehow mentally connected! When this popped into my inbox yesterday I had to laugh out loud, as my housemate and I had only been watching the show the night before and commenting on how absurd it was, and how if you were letting your fiancé loose on such a big day, you would have at least discussed dresses, venues, loves and hates etc. either these women are crazy, or their spouses-to-be have developed an amazing knack of being able to switch off, with hilarious consequences.

Read Vix’s take on the whole affair.

‘Belle x

My latest TV obsession is  Don’t Tell the Bride. It’s up there with my other two loves – Keeping up with the Kardashians and My Big Fat Gypsy Wedding for sheer trashy entertainment. The premise of the show is a couple get £12,000 to plan their wedding but the groom is in charge and has to do it all by himself (along with his best man) whilst keeping her completely in the dark about the plans. They are apparently not supposed to discuss what they would like beforehand so there’s a big chance the groom will get things totally wrong.

I think you have to be a certain type of person to want to do this show in the first place and you have to accept that it might all go wrong but you do get a free wedding and your 15 minutes of fame along with it. It makes great viewing though as you spend the whole time kind of hoping it will all go wrong and the bride will have a meltdown!

I personally could never trust a man to plan my wedding, I would need control over that especially the wedding dress! But watching other people go through it is hilarious.

Although the grooms usually end up choosing a wedding that doesn’t match their bride’s dreams, they tend to love the day in the end. There’s been some notable exceptions though – one groom decided to go to Vegas but that meant most of the wedding party had to be left alone and it was touch and go whether the bride would actually get onto the plane, and in last week’s show, the groom wanted his bride to get on the rollercoaster they went on their first date in her wedding dress – she was not amused. She spent the whole episode swearing 🙂

In honour of show, here are my Top 5 things that I’d hate to be part of my wedding (I really hope this doesn’t come back to bite me one day!):

1. An Elvis impersonator – there’s just no excuse.
2. A beach – the sand would get everywhere.
3. A theme park – I hate rollercoasters.
4. A themed wedding dress – I want to look elegant, not silly.
5. A fireworks display – I would run away terrified. Not fun.

What would you hate to happen at your wedding?

What a nightmare and yet I can see where it could be hilarious to see some poor jerk make all the wrong decisions! Hahaha! I don’t think we have that here in the US, but if it is a successful show, I bet we will see a knock-off sometime soon.
I wouldn’t even risk an outdoor wedding for chance of rain-

oh Susie its fantastic. last weeks one wanted to get married on a rollercoaster because that was their first date. its sweet sometimes, yet totally mental.

I think we do have something along these lines in the US – I feel like I have seen it, but can’t recall the name of the show. Maybe it is the same one, but it was broadcast on BBC America.

In any case, I would have to be pretty secure that my fiance knew my taste well enough to be OK with going on the show. If I had any doubts about his ability to do it right, I just would say NO!

I hope this show catches on. I want a pirate themed wedding, but the candidate bride is not a fan. This would give me the go I’d need!

    • tinkerbelle86 November 10, 2011 at 2:15 pm #

sometimes theyy have themed ones. that sounds fantastic, but i reckon in theory i would be firmly in the no camp! try and get it on youtube and let me know!

So funny……and it’s true, but so horrible how secretly you sit there thinking, “Oh, she won’t like that-will she have a tantrum? I hope so!”

I would hate it if the wedding reception ended up in a pub or sports club-like one poor bride who had her’s in her husband’s rugby club! And my partner is obssessed with cricket, so I’ve warned him about the cricket club already! 😀

Crazy show! It probably doesn’t air on US tv, huh? Not that it matters, since I don’t have cable. I’ll try to get a few episodes online. Should be entertaining.

Themed dress… Never even crossed my mind, Vix. That IS scary.

I think I’m a lot less picky about the whole wedding thing now than I was when I was younger. I’m concerned about things I WANT to be there. Lol. There are some must-haves. Like CAKE.

Yeah can you imagine looking like Miss Bo Peep or something 🙂

ha! That show is so funny!! I would hate a big wedding. I only want my other half and our parents at our wedding – in fact I only want a maximum of 30 people! Small yet intimate….

  6. prenin November 10, 2011 at 3:19 pm #

Just the thought of the groom doing EVERYTHING with no input from the bride is enough for my disaster alarm to go on overdrive!!!

Must admit I just couldn’t bear to watch…

    Love and hugs!

Great post, disturbing show. I mean, it doesn’t bode well for the marriage if the husband can’t get something right for the wedding. I’m not sure what would have happened if I had let my husband completely loose to plan ours, but I’m sure it would have been fun no matter what (I wasn’t the most traditional of brides).

No Elvis impersonators?!?!?! Why not??? LOL!

    Nice post!

I’ve never seen that show, but I may have to check it out. I think the guys would come up with some crazy ideas! There is no way I would get on a rollercoaster in a wedding dress. That seems like an accident waiting to happen. And by “accident” I mean puke.

I’ve never heard of this show but now I want to watch it! I have very little interesting in planning a wedding. It seems like so much stress and work–even though it’s fun in the end. I like the idea of eloping. But to have the groom do it for free–that sounds great. Sign me up! I guess the one thing I would be upset about, is if he picked a terrible dress. I mean, you have to look good on your wedding day!

My flatmate and I save that show for gleeful hangover viewing. There’s something so satisfying about watching the beginning of a young couple’s journey to utter wedded misery.

  13. Natalie November 10, 2011 at 6:23 pm #

I’ve never seen the show either living here in the US. There’s no way I would leave those details to the groom. I’d rather not get married ;)!
Off to You Tube now :)!

I would absolutely not be able to tolerate karaoke at my wedding. I think I could do Vegas but for me the worst would also be a theme park. A Disney themed wedding would not fly…

This show sounds hilarious, maybe I can find it online, it’s definitely not on tv over here, but I could probably rig something through the wonderful world wide web.

    • LittleMissVix November 11, 2011 at 10:01 am #

Ooh Disney theme, I quite like the sound of that 🙂

  15. LifeAsModernWife November 10, 2011 at 8:06 pm #

We have a version of this Canada! Oh it’s amazing the stuff I find entertaining! lol At my wedding, I would hate for there to be any guest with mullet. That would just totally ruin the photos 😉

  16. nrhatch November 10, 2011 at 11:01 pm #

I’ve never heard of it . . . sounds a hoot! Thanks, Vix!

    clowns? no? how come?

Ha ha! I wish we had this show over here! There is no chance in hell I’d let the mister plan everything about our day! That’s just a set up for disaster. But wait… the problem lies in the fact that one has to have a mister to be planning a wedding in the first place…. I am straight outta luck!

I think my nightmare would be a sports themed wedding. I’ve dated a few fellas who have been sooooooo obsessed with a particular team it made me wanna scream. Oh and no animals allowed either. Having a pet may be fabulous, but I’m not keen on having a pooch or a *#&@! cat walking down the aisle before me or after me. Just sayin’!

Ummmm, Laura…. so this reminds me I was supposed to do a guest post for you MONTHS ago… I’m sooooo sorry. I get the world’s worst blogging friend award stamped across my forehead.

This show sounds completely hilarious! I can see why it would be addicting to watch, haha!

  20. Mads November 11, 2011 at 4:50 am #

Wait wait wait…the groom plans your wedding dress too?!? I was ok with the whole idea until that. haha
I would hate the sand too, but I think my groom would probably be better at picking out most things than me. Go figure. I just don’t have the creative romantic gene.

I’m already married…there is no way I would have let my husband plan my day! LOL
Having said that, this sounds like a hilarious show, never heard of it here in the U.S. though.
