A Spoonful of Sugar Makes The Medicine Go Down

23 Apr

I’ve been in America for a week, and I still cant help but laugh at the adverts on the TV. At home, we have adverts for everything; from insurance companies to supermarkets to clothes catalogues. Adverts are an annoyance; a break in the programmes we are watching and a chance to sell to us. I hate them.

But in America they are on a whole new level! First of all, they advertise for medicines; but in such a weird way. They sell it for about ten seconds, whether it be headache tablets or the contraception pill, and then they go on for about thirty seconds about all the possible side effects, including death. its brilliant!

Adverts like that would not wash in England. There would be support groups all over the place demanding that it be removed and loads of money be donated to a charity of their choice. Still, it makes me laugh!!!

When you put it that way it is hilarious! Thanks for giving us a fresh perspective!

I’ve always thought those commercials were hysterical!

Hilarious! And we thought ours were bad 🙂 I heard they have a lot more of them as well, almost more than the actual TV show you’re supposed to be watching! Actually I’m quite looking forward to seeing the BT wedding 😉

    ROFL! That’s hilarious.
Adverts are all hilarious most times — unlessit was born out of an excellent creative spark!

You should see some of the ones on Indian TV. You’d wonder whether to laugh to to slap! 😀

The difference is in the UK we have an NHS so there is no point in pharmaceuticals trying to sell us their drugs. They sell them to doctors instead. There are loads of adverts though. Have you seen the political ones where they slag each other off?

    Sounds like a giggle! 🙂

“Milton’s Constipation treatement – caution: May cause explosive diarrhoea!!!

Yeah – like THAT would ever get on British TV…

    Love and hugs!

That’s an interesting take on our tv advertisements. We are so used to them that we hardly notice. The medicine ones that are so explicit have only been on a couple of years. It is strange to tell you to take this medicine and tell you all the horrible things that can happen to you!

THe commercials are OUTTA CONTROL! I don’t know why any one would even consider taking any of the meds after seeing the commercials. The TV is a huge waste of time to me any more… I watch Glee and Grey’s faithfully, but most often will just watch them on hulu.com to avoid most of the commercials!

its INSANE!!! take this birth control pill. it will stop you getting pregnant but you might go blind or die.

I think they are advertised in this way because in US the legal things are crazy – I mean they sue for about anything; so my guess would be that the pharmaceutical (how do you spell it?) companies are protecting their asses by giving all the possible side effects; if anything happens they can say – well, we did warn.

they arent allowed to advertise in the UK for meds on the tv. well, you do see some like hayfever meds etc, but nothing like america

Same here! It is amazing, isn’t it? And all the car salesmen SHOUT!!! Have you noticed that?

@Surrey gal – you can’t advertise presecription medicines in the UK or Australia – it isn’t a question of advertising in a certain way – these ads are just WEIRD to us!

  12. Surrey gal April 25, 2011 at 8:24 am #

Oh, I didn’t know that! I guess it’s wise NOT to advertise meds, I mean people are not doctors, after all…

haha! Great post! BTW, the BT wedding is amazing, though!
however, there are some brit adverts that get me peeved off, i.e. Go compare, safestyleuk, the range, farmfoods, and some more….!!

  14. jessiepeace April 26, 2011 at 12:18 pm #

Go compare is the worst advert in history, but they have done it for a reason if it wasn’t that annoying everyone in Britain wouldn’t know what it was.

I want to see some american adverts I haven’t really seen many, I could imagine them being very over exaggerated?

Hmm… never having traveled out of country (well, except to Mexico, where we didn’t watch TV), I never thought about how different ads might be. Interesting!
As a side note, the big Pharma companies basically run the country, so it’s not amazing that they have most of the commercials…not to mention we’re all depressed and fat and whatnot and looking for answers in pill form….
