Gaga… Ohlalala

So the new track from Lady Gaga came out recently, and you can’t escape from the hype that it has caused. Twitter, Facebook and Yahoo Buzz are reporting her ranking in their top ten trends of the day, and every station you switch to on the radio had people talking about it. Is she the next Madonna? Does it sound like Express Yourself? Is it the best one she has released to date? Who cares.

Why do people love her so much? Yes, she produced catchy pop songs that perforate the radio stations and get stuck in your head like an elastic band in the Hoover, but what about her makes her so amazing?

I cannot understand the hype around her. Some people are just fame hungry and anyone who wears a dress made entirely out of slices of meat falls into that pool in my opinion.

But is she a microcosm of how the rest of the world operates? Is it true to an extent that the wilder and more outrageous you seem, the more liked and noticed you are?

The worrying fact is that is true. It’s always the cheerleaders and singers that are popular in schools; the girls that throw themselves out there and make a lot of noise. I went to my cousins graduation from eight grade last summer, and was suddenly immersed in a situation I hadn’t been in for half a decade; awkward looking boys in suits and girls in their prom dresses, all eagerly awaiting their results. And you could clearly see the divide. Some girls wore pretty dresses and small heels; a dash of makeup to accentuate their pretty features and a massive smile. But the others, the potential Gaga’s and Beyonce’s of the crowd wore dresses where you could see cheek and makeup that Dame Edna would baulk at.

But what these girls need to remember is that the majority of them are just late bloomers. Sure, some of them will end up being complete swamp donkeys* but the rest of them will enter their twenties looking amazing and wonder what all the fuss is about. And you’ll know exactly what I mean if you were the one with the braces, or the glasses, or the nose stuck in a book wanting to disappear. Or all three!

I have however, had a listen to it and it is completely interchangeable with Madonna. I think ill just stick to my firm favourites; The Beach Boys, Bananarama, White Lies and Rihanna.  Yep, I know, I’m far too cool for my own good!

(*managed to sneak the swamp donkey reference in, promised I would!!!)

Know exactly what you mean. Pop-culture seems to revolve around a cult of personality rather than talent. Perhaps because in a pop star it is longer necessary to be able to write music (can pay someone else to do that), or sing (sound engineers can work wonders) so their lone remaining function is to create as much media controversy as possible and ‘Build The Brand’. If they have everyone gossiping about their antics on a Monday morning then the jobs a good ‘un!

I agree – the more weird and wild they are, they get noticed. Doesn’t seem to matter any more if they can’t sing a note; where’s the talent gone?
What a shallow life they must lead.
I’ll stick to Cliff, Elvis and The Beatles – oh, I almost forgot – Alan Jackson!

i love alan jackson….my mum used to force me to listen to him as a child and he has totally rubbed off. livin on love makes me happy 🙂

Me too. I can’t stand Lady Gaga or her music. It is a shame really that the music industry and as you stated, the rest of the world and it’s changing cultures have came to this. For me? Frank Sinatra 🙂

Oh don’t get me wrong, I think there’s still lots of wonderful music being created 🙂 But you have to dig around for it.

you do, but even the good stuff becomes super overplayed and generally annoying. i love some songs when they come out, but after a few weeks and not being able to turn on the computer without hearing them, i want to cut my ears off!

GaGa is a bit like marmite for me, I love her music (but Rihanna is way better!) but I hate her shocking outfits! She has just gone cr-azy. Urgh, GaGa should tone down a bit for my liking.

BTW, I prefer Bad Romance to Born This Way……

Lady GaGa definitely just manages to annoy me most of the time.

I love the Beach Boys!! Honestly there’s not much new music that I enjoy these days, I dig the old stuff.

Give me Kate Bush any day!!! 🙂

Lady Gaga’s music videos scare me… heh. I prefer it when she’s just sitting down and talking, like in interviews, but when she starts singing it becomes too bizzare for comfort

I cannot understand the hype around her too. She’s really hungry for fame and I guess she would do everything for fame and money.

Love this! I’m not a huge Gaga fan either. I do think some of the music is catchy and it’s fun to dance to, but that’s about it. I’m not too fond of her newest song either…give me Britney any day 🙂 And, I’m ashamed to say I like Ke$ha haha.
I agree that she’s just looking for attention and the only way she can manage it is to wear outrageous outfits and makeup.

While Gaga’s definitely into provocation and boundary-pushing and shameless attention-grabbing, it’s all the other things about her that make her actually beloved: her emphasis on artistry in an age that’s all about the commercial (whether or not you like that artistry), her proven attention to social justice, her generosity with both her money and her love (she is kinder and more patient with her fans than most stars today)… that’s why she has such a following. Sure, some people just like her crazy clothes and her dance beats, but a lot of people (who have done the research) love her because they realize she’s an interesting and decent-hearted human being, too.

Oof, sorry for the long comment. It’s just that after a few years of keeping up with Gaga stuff, I’ve become kind of ridiculously knowledgeable about her, and I always feel the need to throw in my two-cents’ worth. 😉

I completely agree with your comment. I don’t necessarily love every song she’s recorded, but she does discuss real art, and she helps to keep the much needed conversation about acceptance and openness going. Her misfires are at least the misfires of an artist — perhaps often an “outsider artist,” but an artist nevertheless.

Born this way totally sounds like express yourself, I’m surprised madonna is okay with it! I admit I like some of her songs but that meat dress made me feel sick!!

    Another fantastic post!

I agree…I have many friends from high school that were not outrageous, “gorgeous” by the world’s standards, or otherwise notable…but they went on to become beautiful, wonderful, successful and even desired. Isn’t it funny how that works?

One funny more recent example was Kate Hudson. I used to work at a bookstore in Santa Barbara, California. I was in charge of the music section of the store, and so would try to arrange for artists to have CD signings and CD release parties. There was a local girl with a Christian/gospel CD that just came out. Just 16 years old, fairly “plain” looking but cute, and a great voice. But…there’s a million of those girls out there right now, right? She would come into the store frequently, and follow me around just killing time and checking on how many CD’s she had sold. It was cute, but she would almost sometimes be in the way! Once, she became very concerned because she counted her CD’s in the bin, and excalimed to me: “Dug, I haven’t sold ANY CD’s since last week!” I had to explain to her that she had actually sold 10…we replaced those with a new shipment.

    Her name now? Katy Perry.

I loved this post Laura…and I’d opt for a girl who wasn’t much to look at before, slipped under the radar, and would rather have her nose in a book than be prom queen. Any day. 🙂

Nice blog post. It is rather ironic that a woman who wears a meat dress to a major soiree also has a song lamenting paparazzi … odd.

Down the road the wilder looking people will be the most amusing to their offspring. I wasn’t that wild but in the seventies I had 3 inch high yellow platform shoes and dark purple lipstick, accessorized with an orange car, an orange ceiling, and orange drapes. For some reason my kids didn’t inherit the good taste gene and fall about laughing …

Haha I loved this post! I like Lady Gaga but hype with almost anything annoys me for some reason. I guess all of the people jumping on bandwagons is…I don’t even know.

And no matter how much you like a song, hearing it 150 times on the radio would make anyone hate it.

I suppose I married a girl like that (didn’t know her then of course) and yes she’s the best

Lady GaGao reminds me of the lead singer from Missing Persons. Love Banarama and one of my favorite concerts ever, was at the Orange County fair, a hot summer afternoon listening to the Beach Boys perform, dancing around on the grass with a surprise visit from John Stamos, who played the drums. He’s a local boy from that area…and that day summed up Summer for me. I always think of that day when I hear a beach boys song…and at the start of every summer.
